GOOD SHABBOS
21 January 2010 |
|
|

Dear All,
The weather is really strange, BUT…..bearable, with sooooo much rain, and luckily sunshine thereafter…….Not complaining as my Zunnelle Joel in London, reckons that it is freezing there and they have had plenty of snow, and of course Mark Sarachik was in Malat, Lithuania last week, and the temp was -11 Degrees and plenty snow…….
The weather ‘amper’ prevented our win in the final test against the ‘Poms’ and we managed to get enough play time between all the rain stops…could have been a disaster if we were held to another draw, and lost the series…a drawn result is not GR88888, BUT ….a win is much better. …….The bowlers showed much more line & aggression……….we ‘Tukka’ made a VERY average team look brilliant…..! !! ! !! and my Chavers on the ‘Kosher Strip’ in the Shtetl, Maxi (Maxi’s butchery) , Alan Kopelowitz (Pie Worx) and Billy Blumberg (Hairdresser) & Guest, Mervyn Tankelowitz ( ‘Maggabi’) agree…must say the Shopkela’s on the strip are looking E-mazing. With Tiberius having a total ‘make over’…..The Pie Worx is NOT only a Pie shop, BUT….has soooo many other ‘gerichten’ and his Barbeque Spatchcok Chicken is GR8888888 …Mooooooooz is a very good meeting place, and Bolnicks, have of course very kind of ‘Chick’ in the World…..
moet julle asseblief verwyder. Deesdae staan die man en die vrou sit
wanneer fotos geneem word."
Die pa stuur toe die volgende brief terug:
"Boeta, toe jy vyf jaar oud was, toe val jy in die dam en Boela het jou
gered. So Boela bly.
kom." Einaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah…… (This is Tukka a bit more difficult, BUT……….many will understand, and ‘Lag’ a bit louder……)
Sokka 2010………………… ?????????? Who knows…….everyone has a different opionon and the look of the fields for the CAF Cup in Angola are ‘Lekker’ and they seem to be drawing crowds, although their stadiums are much smaller than ours……. On the ‘GEES’ (Spirit) side, everyone is leaning towards the Sokka 2010 ‘happening’ and Stan & Pete are offering their Barmy ‘Mishugas’ Menu as a special for the Kinderlach….. See http://stantgsm.com/list_info.php
The Beth Din will sooooon have a list of ALL ‘Kosher’ outlets in the ‘Beloved Country’ so that local-yokels going around the Country to watch , will know where to get what, and will circulate the info worldwide to the ‘Yidden’ coming from far away places……… Dave Shapiro (SASFIN ) got this angle about Sokka 2010 right, BUT…….the Manne reckon he is white, which means racist, which means his article is biased…..Oey vey…you cannot win….. http://www.timeslive.co.za/opinion/columnists/article256544.ece
A woman goes to the doctor, beaten black and blue. . . . .
Doctor: "What happened?"
Woman:" Doctor, I don't know what to do. Every time my husband comes home drunk he beats me to a pulp...."
Doctor:” I have a real good medicine against that: When your husband comes home drunk, just take a glass of Rooibos tea and start gargling with it. Just gargle and gargle".
2 weeks later she comes back to the doctor and looks reborn and fresh again.
Woman:" Doc that was a brilliant idea! Every time my husband came home drunk I gargled repeatedly with Rooibos tea and he never touched me.
Doctor:" You see how keeping your mouth shut helps!!!"
Thanks to ‘Sterling’ work by ‘OUR’ local Jewish Report about the Matric success among the ‘Yiddisher’ kinderlach , it was very easy to access, and all the ‘Yiddisher’ Schools and CBC (Christian Brothers College for Jews –Crawford)
again produced excellent results…. As I get older, I seem to know less and less ‘Kinderlach’ that write these days……..Special ‘Shakeach’ to Josh Greensberg (Little Stan’s Zunnelle ) who got 4 Distinctions at CBC, Micael Zollmann who got 5 (KDVP)…..Jed Lazarus (CBC – Pretoria) 6 distinctions, Saige Epstein (KDL) 8 Distinctions & her ‘Cuzzie’ 6, Shaul Yachad (Torah Academy – Mandy & Pam’s Zunnelle) ) 4 , Gary Ganz ( Eden Durban) 4 and I see that Cheyem Shaked at Hertzlia got 4…I am sure he is the Zunnelle of the Shaked’s who started the Sabra Band at Simcha’s many years ago…….The amount of 9,8,7,6 Distinctions was VERY high among the Yiddisher students, considering what a small goup the whole ‘Yiddisher’ Matric’s are…Shakeach…Well done to all Zillion distinctions are just a pass….as long as you passed……(Yes, I did pass and this is my 40th year……).
In a courtroom, a purse snatcher is on trial and the victim is stating what happened.
She says, "Yes, that is him. I saw him clear as day. I'd remember his face anywhere."
At which point, the defendant bursts out, "You couldn't see my face, lady.
I was wearing a mask!" ( Schmuck………)
Women are ANGELS ……
and when someone breaks our wings ... we simply continue to fly .....on a broomstick!!! ...
SCAM BE AWARE !!!
Just got scammed out of $25.00 !
Bought Tiger Woods DVD entitled "My favorite 18 holes".
Turns out it's about golf.
Pass this on so others don't get scammed too….Einaaaaaaaaaaah..! ! ! ! !
The Haiti Earthquake is really a shocking situation, with 200,000 ?? killed and many more homeless and of course the future of one of the poorest countries on earth, is looking really gloomy ….got a short, to the point report on the ‘Yiddisher’ inhabitants over the past 300 years…. See some info about Hiati below the ‘Vort’ http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/vjw/haiti.html
Been sooo many e-mails about the IMMEDIATE response by Israel in getting a mobile hospital in, before the Yanks even woke up the next day, BUT…..of course Israel will never get any ‘Covet’ . http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost/Page/VideoPlayer&

The doctor explained to Abe that he had a serious ailment for which an operation was absolutely imperative. Abe turned pale and asked, "Isn't it very dangerous?"
"Yes," the doctor replied.
"Five out of six who undergo this operation die, but as for you, you have nothing to worry about."
"Why not?" eagerly inquired Abe .
"Well, you're sure to recover because my last five patients died,"
the doctor reassured him. (Oey vey………..)
Judge Goldstone, where are you now? Eating your heart out and hanging your head down in shame I hope.
The favorite occupation in the UN is Israel bashing. More resolutions have been passed condemning Israel than all the so called democratic nations such as Sudan, China, Russia and others for their crimes against their minorities.
I think it is time that the world should know about Israel's disproportionate response. … ??????
Members of ZAKA, the Israeli ultra-Orthodox volunteer rescue organization, were on the scene as well. On Shabbat, they labored, digging in the rubble of a collapsed multi-story university building, where cries were heard. After hours of effort, they succeeded in pulling eight students from that rubble, alive.
These ZAKA members then took time, in the midst of the chaos, to wrap themselves in their tallitot (prayer shawls) and recite their Shabbat prayers. Undoubtedly most if not all of the Haitians on the scene had never seen such a sight. When the men had finished praying, a crowd of people gathered around them and kissed their tallitot.
According to one report, head of the ZAKA mission, Mati Goldstein said:
"With all the hell going on outside, even when things get bad Judaism says we must take a deep breath and go on to save more people.
"We did everything to save lives, despite Shabbat. People asked, 'Why are you here? There are no Jews here', but we are here because the Torah orders us to save lives." At one point, when things were very grim, Goldstein reported that one mission member started to sing, Heveinu Shalom Aleichem (We bring peace to you.) "I had tears in my eyes," he said.
The ZAKA mission will be staying in Haiti a couple more days, even though beyond a certain point it is highly unlikely that anyone else will be found alive under the rubble.
Two Irish drinking buddies, pondering the future.
"You know Flanagan, we've had great sport together for many years.
It just came to mind that should I happen to go first,it would mean a great deal to me if you
would say a few kind words at me grave."
"That I'll do, O'Donnell, that I'll do.
But should it be I who should happen to go first, for old times sake I'd be forever grateful if you would pour a bottle of Irish Whiskey over me grave."
"That I'll do. But about the Irish whiskey, would you mind it so much if it should
happen to pass through me kidneys first?" Mmmmmmm….
Got an E-mail from Ronel Zeff, the Marketing ‘Balabos’ @ the KDFoundation,

I see the reports confirm what I wrote last week, that Cape Town was not nearly as busy as in past years, and Methinks it is due to the shortage of ‘Moooooola’
And not because people are saving for the Sokka 2010 in 6 months time…….Cape Town has built an E-mazing ‘Tourist’ infrastructure and needs International tourists to keep things going…or else they could just vanish…….Methinks that the One & Only Hotel in the Waterfront is totally over the top for Souff Effrikka, and cannot get much local business…….it is just toooooo expensive for locals….and truth be told…..it does not strike me as a ‘Posh’ hotel….???? Time will tell….. In Hout Bay, met up with the two Soap Ladies…..they have been entertaining the crowds at Hout Bay for the past 7 years, and they are E-mazing, and according to their website, they have raised over R300,000 for charity……have seen them over the years, and had a chat to them this year……Shakeach…..
One day, a gorilla escaped from the Bronx Zoo. They searched for him everywhere in every borough.
They announced his disappearance on the radio and television as well as in the newspapers, but no one reported seeing it.
At last, the gorilla was discovered in the New York Public Library. Officials of the zoo and the animal handlers were summoned to the library where they found it sitting at a desk in the reading room with two books spread out in front of him.
The gorilla was reading with great concentration. One book was the Bible and the other was Darwin's "Origin of Species".
The zookeepers asked the gorilla what he was doing.
The gorilla replied, "I'm trying to figure out whether I am my brother's keeper or my keeper's brother." ..Yislaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaik….

Abe & Sarah, a wealthy couple, are coming up to their Golden wedding anniversary and Sarah has been thinking for some months about how they should celebrate. Then she comes to a decision.
" Abe," she says, "I'm going to book us a wonderful 6 weeks cruise. I know you don't like ships because you got sea sick last time, but trust me; this one will be perfect for us. It's called 'Bubelah’ of the Sea, an intimate seven-star luxury liner with everything kosher we could ever want to eat made available. Let's give it a go."
Abe certainly isn't pleased with Faye's decision, but to keep ‘Sholem’ - he says, "OK dear."
On the day of the cruise, Abe & Sarah drive up to the dock in their Rolls Royce.
Captain Cohen is on the bridge as they pass by and calls in the purser.
"Find out who they are and invite them to dine at my table tonight."
Later, the purser knocks on the door of the Royal State Room. When Sarah answers the door, the purser says, "Compliments of Captain Cohen, madam.
He would very much like you both to dine with him this evening."
Abe comes to the door and says, "Who is it Sarah, is there a problem?"
"This man says that Captain Cohen wants us to eat with him this evening," replies Sarah.
"I told you we shouldn't have come," says Abe, "seven-star or no seven-star, we have only been on this boat half-an-hour and already we have to eat with the crew." –Oey vey……

Parsha of The Week |
|
Rabbi Yossy Goldman,
Sydenham Shul,
C/O ‘Beloved Country’
Finding Freedom
Free at last, free at last, thank G-d Almighty we are free at last. Who said these words? No, it wasn’t Moses but American civil rights leader, Dr Martin Luther King. But it could have been Moses – or for that matter any one of the millions of Jews who were liberated from Egyptian bondage.
This is the week when we read of the great Exodus. Let my people go that they may serve Me was the Divine call transmitted by Moses to Pharaoh. Now, if the purpose of leaving Egypt and Pharaoh’s whip was to be able to serve G-d, so where is the freedom? We are still slaves, only now we are servants of the Almighty?
Indeed, countless individuals continue to question the merits of religion in general. Who wants to submit to the rigors of religion when we can be free spirits? Religion stifles the imagination, stunts our creativestyle, forever shouts instructions and lays down the law. Thou Shalt do this and Thou Shalt better not do that, or else! Do’s and don’ts, rules and regulations are the hallmark of every belief system but why conform to any system at all? Why not just be me?
Many Jews argue similarly. Mitzvahs cramp my style. Keeping kosher is a serious inconvenience. Shabbos really gets in the way of my weekend. And Pesach has got to be the biggest headache of the year.
Long ago, the Rabbis of the Mishna said it was actually the other way around. There is no one as free as he who is occupied with the study of Torah. But how can this possibly be true? Torah is filled with rules of law, ethics and even expectations and exhortations that we take the high road and behave beyond the call of duty. How can the Rabbis say that Torah makes us free? Surely it is inhibiting rather than liberating?
Let me share an answer I once heard on the radio while driving in my car. It was during a BBC interview with Malcolm Muggeridge, the former editor of Punch, the satirical British magazine. Punch magazine was arguably England’s most irreverent publication. It mocked and ridiculed the royal family long before they did it to themselves. In his latter years, Malcolm Muggeridge became religious and the interviewer was questioning how the sultan of satire, the prince of Punch could make such a radical transformation and become religious? How could he stifle such a magnificent free spirit as his?
Muggeridge’s answer was a classic, which I still quote regularly. He said he had a friend who was a famous yachtsman, an accomplished navigator of the high seas. A lesson he once gave him in sailing would provide the answer to the BBC man’s question. He taught him that if you want to enjoy the freedom of the high seas, you must first become a slave to the compass.
A young novice might challenge the experienced professional’s advice. But why should I follow that little gadget? Why can’t I go where I please? It’s my yacht! But every intelligent person understands that without the navigational fix provided by the compass we will flounder and sail in circles. Only by following the lead of the compass will the wind catch our sails so we can experience the ecstasy and exhilaration of the high seas. If you want to enjoy the freedom of the high seas you must first become a slave to the compass.
The Torah is the compass of life. It provides our navigational fix so we know where to go and how to get there. Without the Torah’s guidance and direction we would be lost in the often stormy seas of confusion. Without a spiritual infrastructure we flounder about, wandering aimlessly through life. Just look at our kids when they’re on vacation from school and are “free” from the disciplines of the educational system. Unless they have a program of some kind to keep them busy – like a summer camp – they become very frustrated in their “freedom.”
Within the Torah lifestyle there is still ample room for spontaneity and freedom of expression. Not all Rabbis are clones. To the untrained eye every yeshiva bochur looks identical – a black hat, glasses and a beard. The truth is that every one is distinctively different; an individual with his very own tastes attitudes, personality and preferences. They may look the same but they are each unique.
We can be committed to the compass and still be free spirits. Indeed, there are none as free as they who are occupied with Torah.
