GOOD SHABBOS
22 October 2009 |
|
|

Dear All,
The weather has been very strange, with storms, quite cold spells, and odd hail…….BUT….both semi finals of the Currie Cup took place without any interruptions……
The two Currie Cup semi finals were really GR88888 and tense, and I believe in the end it was just luck to have won and misfortune to have lost, the games were soooo close…….The Cheetahs (Ou Vrystaaaaaaaaaaaaat…) did very well to beat the Sharks in Durban, even by one last gasp score, and the Bulls were lucky to get a win at Newlands, BUT……as Naaaasty Botha says; It is what is on the scoreboard that counts, not how good you played, and of course he is right…..
Next week should be a ‘Humdinger’ of a Final, with the Bulls hopefully getting the win, at their beloved Loftus……. Brussouw for the Cheetahs and Steyn for the Bulls have ‘Tukka’ been the find of the season, and I must point out that I ‘punted’ them L-O-N-G before the Lions tour, and they have made a HUGE difference although Schalk Burger had a good game for Province when he came on…….Looks like Joe Peterson will eventually become the new ‘Glamour’ Bok fullback and reminds one pf ‘Sir’ Percy Montgomery…….in looks, kicking and general play…??? The Bulls should take the Final next week, BUT….the Cheetahs will not be a push over…..E-mazing that the final was Zold out nearly two weeks before……………..
Sokka 2010 is ‘Tukka’ around the corner, and the ‘Bobbameises’ does not stop….after 8 deafeats out of 9 friendlies, the Scmuck of a coach says he was employed to win the REAL thing, not friendlies……Oey vy, @ R1,4 m a month, that is craZy …and of course now the talk is that the other ‘Palooooka’ Manuel Perreira, is being tipped again….. how stupid can they be…….They will have to pick a Local / Yokel, even if he is not the right choose, OR there might be a lynching party out……The $$$$ involved is outrageous, and should have been structured on a success basis……???? I see that Julie Baby (Malema) says that the ANCyouth league will not allow Parreira to come back…for once I must agree with Julie…. Reminds me of an OLD joke
At an interview, the Boxer is asked;
How many fights you had …20. How many did you loooooose…20.
How do you account for that..??? You cannot win them all…..(Einaaaaaaaaah..)
Atheism is a non-prophet organization.
Two hats were hanging on a hat rack in the hallway. One hat said to the other,
'You stay here, I'll go on a head.'
I wondered why the baseball kept getting bigger. Then it hit me.
A sign on the lawn at a drug rehab centre said: 'Keep off the Grass.'
A small boy swallowed some coins and was taken to a hospital. When his grandmother telephoned to ask how he was, a nurse said, 'No change yet.'

That GR8888888888 ‘Rugger / Bugger’ David Berman (ex Durban) is not only a ‘Rugger’ analyst, BUT….a Stocks & Shares man also, and again I would like to wish the family Mazeltov on the birth of their 6th. Kid last week in New York, and not sure where Dave gets all this time, as he also runs a ‘BIG’ Chess for Children project back ‘Home’ in the Beloved Country…a ‘Youtube’ with Dave discussing Xmas sales etc….. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdC1hGOLAaI David Berman, founder of Durban Capital ( strange name in NY…??) , talks with Bloomberg's Margaret Brennan about U.S. retail sales. Retail sales rose for the first time in 13 months as September Those that like a GOOD ‘Rugger’ report every now and then can subscribe to Daves ‘Rugger / Bugger’ column at DeeBeeRugby@aol.com
A man was sunbathing naked at the beach.
For the sake of civility, and to keep it from getting sunburned, he had a hat over his privates.
A woman walks past and says, snickering, "If you were a gentleman you'd lift your hat."
He raised an eyebrow and replied, …… "If you weren't so ugly it would lift itself."
Another GR8888 ‘Youtube’ (River dance) from the Smith family in the ‘Beloved Country’ … A must watch ….. The Smith family are ‘Mishpocha’ to the Lurie family from Nussbaums ‘Kosher’ butchery….. A man in Pick’n Pay tries to buy half a cauliflower.
The very young produce assistant tells him that they only sell whole cauliflowers.
The man persists and demands to see the manager.
The boy says he'll talk to his manager about it.
Walking into the back room, the boy said to his manager,
'Some Brat out there wants to buy half a cauliflower.'
As he finished the sentence, he turned to find the man standing right behind him, so he quickly added, '... and this gentleman has kindly offered to buy the other half.'
The manager approved the deal, and the man went on his way.
Later the manager said to the lad, 'I was impressed with the way you got yourself out of that situation earlier. We like people who think on their feet here.
Where are you from, son?'
'Liverpool, sir,' the boy replied.
'Well, why did you leave Liverpool?' the manager asked.
The boy said, 'Sir, there's nothing but whores and footballers up there.'
'Really?' said the manager. 'My wife is from Liverpool.'
'You're kidding?' replied the lad. ' Which team did she play for?'
The Justice Goldstone report on the Gaza War, has really caused untold controversy, and there are soooo many E-mails, articles etc that it is hard to read them all, BUT……the speech that Colonel Kemp, A British War expert made at the UN is special, not because it supports ‘US’ , BUT….because what he says makes sense……the majority of GR8888 thinkers, reckon that he should have excused himself from the Commission like others did, knowing that which ever way he ‘SAW’ it, would cause controversy……it ‘TUKKA” would have made sense to just not get involved in a such a controversial commission, especially him being a ‘Yid’…….See report at ;
http://www.unwatch.org/site/apps/nlnet/content2.aspx?c=bdKKISNqEmG&b=1313923&ct=7536409 ….and on the other side of the coin, Reports from Prof Gershlowitz say that Justice Goldstone, is strting to ‘walk’ away from his original thoughts….Goldstone Backs Away from Report -The Two Faces of an International Poseur - Hudson New York.htm Mmmmmmmm, looks like a real
‘Humdinger’ brewing……..
A Scout Master was teaching his boy scouts about survival in the desert.
"What are the three most important things you should bring with you in case you get lost in the desert?" he asked.
Several hands went up, and many important things were suggested such as food, matches, etc. Then one little boy in the back eagerly raised his hand.
"Yes Timmy, what are the three most important things you would bring with you?" asked the Scout Master.
Timmy replied: "A compass, a canteen of water, and a deck of cards."
"Why's that Timmy?"
"Well," answered Timmy, "the compass is to find the right direction, the water is to prevent dehydration..."
"And what about the deck of cards?" asked the Scout Master impatiently.
"Well, Sir, as soon as you start playing Solitaire, someone is bound to come up behind you and say, "Put that red nine on top of that black ten."
Following on last weeks E-mail about ‘One of OURS’ Shani Krebs, who attended Arcadia, and King David Victory park, and then got ‘Bust’ and has spent 14 gruelling years in a Thailand prison, he celebrated his 50 th last week, and my friend Louise made a photgraph album for him of some of the Art that he had given her……Really E-mazing stuff…see http://www.stantgsm.com/list_info.php
I went to the butcher's and wanted to bet him R50 that he couldn't reach the meat on the top shelf.
He said, 'No, the steaks are too high.'
Ever stop to think, and forget to start again?
Did a ‘Locum’ at Jonathan Seligman’s Barmy, and it was a very nice ‘Lebbedikke’ crowd, with a GR888 vibe….Jonathan is a ‘Real’ Stan The Good Shabbos Man’ fan, and the Seligman family hail from Rhodesia (Zim - BOB –We) and I know his Booba & Zaida Jocelyn and Lou Morris from ‘Amolikke Yoren’ and his Uncle & Aunt Leanne & Mike Morris…….from San Diego…were also there for the Simcha…….
The guys were all at a deer camp. No one wanted to room with Bob, because he snored so badly.. They decided it wasn't fair to make one of them stay with him the whole time, so they voted to take turns.
The first guy slept with Bob and comes to breakfast the next morning with his hair a mess and his eyes all bloodshot. They said, "Man, what happened to you? He said, "Bob snored so loudly, I just sat up and watched him all night."
The next night it was a different guy's turn. In the morning, same thing, hair all standing up, eyes all bloodshot. They said, "Man, what happened to you? You look awful! He said, 'Man, that Bob shakes the roof with his snoring. I watched him all night."
The third night was Fred's turn. Fred was a tanned, older cowboy, a man's man. The next morning he came to breakfast bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. "Good morning!" he said. They couldn't believe it. They said, "Man, what happened?"
He said, "Well, we got ready for bed. I went and tucked Bob into bed, patted him on the butt, and kissed him good night. Bob sat up and watched me all night.
Popped into the Bresgi / Bloch wedding and it really was a WWW…The Bresgi’s did the first décor at the Simon Kuper for us 30 years ago, and Mrs Bresgi’s Nephews, Hillel & Alan Shrank worked for us as waiters in the early 80’s and they were with a big group of Yiddisher ‘Kinderlach’ that worked…….Shana (Arluck ) Segal (Irvine) was of course the ‘Balabos’ of the waiters in those days, and other kinderlach were Hayely ( Snoyman) & Andre Levitan (Oz), Roy Wittert (Melboure), Andy (Chodos) & Harvey Wainer , Larry Hirshowitz, etc, etc and those were really Happy Days @ Stan & Pete……. It was Tukka a meet ‘old’ Chavers evening with Erez Shaked & Nama coming from Plett to do the music… Erez and the family ran the Sabra’s in the Good ‘ol days at Simcha’s and Chris Moore was the photographer, who I have not seen around for a few years……
‘Lekker’ wedding, and plenty ‘Gees’ …Pictures; http://www.stantgsm.com/list_classifieds.php

Mike was going to be married to Karen so his Father sat him down for a little chat.
He said, 'Mike, let me tell you something.
On my wedding night in our honeymoon suite, I took off my pants, handed them to your Mother, and said, 'Here, try these on.''
She did and said, 'These are too big. I can't wear them.'
I replied, 'Exactly.. I wear the pants in this family and I always will.'
Ever since that night, we have never had any problems.
'Hmmm,' said Mike. He thought that might be a good thing to try.
On his honeymoon, Mike took off his pants and said to Karen, 'Here, try these on..'
She tried them on and said, 'These are too large. They don't fit me.'
Mike said, 'Exactly. I wear the pants in this family and I always will. I don't want you to ever forget that.'
Then Karen took off her panties and handed them to Mike.
She said, 'Here, you try on mine.'
Mike did and said, 'I can't get into your panties.'
Karen said, 'Exactly. And if you don't change your attitude, you never will.'

Parsha of The Week |
|
Rabbi Yossy Goldman,
Sydenham Shul,
C/O ‘Beloved Country’
The Problem with Preaching…………
Do sermons really work? Can the words of any one individual really have an effect on the way people live their lives? Is anyone out there actually listening? (Reading?)
Rabbis are probably unrealistic when they anticipate dramatic results from their sermons. But it’s not as bad as the cynics would have us believe, either.
The late Rabbi Sydney Katz of Pretoria once compared the chances of a sermon succeeding to the odds of a man standing on top of the Empire State Building and throwing down an aspirin which would be caught by a man on the street below who just happened to have a headache at the time!
But we still try.
The Prophet Isaiah called the great flood of this week’s parsha, “Waters of Noah.” According to commentary, this is because Noah bore a degree of responsibility for the devastating deluge. But why was it his fault? Wasn’t he the righteous man of his time? Apparently, because Noah may not have tried hard enough to turn around the corrupt lifestyle of his generation, the waters are named after him. Yes, he built his Ark, but did he reach out to those who never saw his ark? Did he shout out to his contemporaries that Doomsday was really coming?
Ever since Noah, this is the mission of anyone charged with the task of spiritual leader.
What is a Rabbi? An “official” to preside over our rites of passage? Sure, that is a very important part of the job, but is that all it is, a functionary? The essence of a rabbi is to be a teacher, a guide for life, a moral barometer and the conscience of the community. The word Rabbi - or in Hebrew Rabi – means “my teacher,” to teach Torah and to teach right from wrong based on the G-dly value system enshrined in the Torah.
So occasionally it becomes necessary for rabbi to play preacher and point out the error of a community’s ways. No, it’s not the most popular thing a rabbi can do but to quote late Chief Rabbi LI Rabinowitz, “I am not prepared to sacrifice my principles on the altar of popularity.”
That’s why the Talmud states “When you see a Rabbi who is beloved by the entire community it is not because he is so good but rather because he does not rebuke them in matters of faith,” Kesubos 105. Speaking for myself, I am not a loner. I’m not anti-social. I like people and would love to be loved by everyone without exception. But there are times when one cannot shirk the moral responsibility to say what is right – and, sometimes, what is wrong.
Which brings us back to Noah. Commentary is divided on the extent of Noah’s righteousness. Yes, the Bible calls him a Tzaddik, a righteous man. But the title is qualified when it adds the word “in his generations.” Was he objectively righteous or only in comparison to his evil generation? How would he have rated when compared to a really saintly man like Abraham?
As always, both these perspectives are Torah and therefore true. The full picture can only be ascertained when we look at a thing with both eyes. Are we products of our environment? Is it impossible to resist societal pressures? If so, then any good we manage to do is an incredible achievement and deserving of praise. Or, do we have the power to triumph over any and every obstacle in our paths? Look at Abraham who came from a pagan family, discovered G-d, and changed the world. Judged by that standard, anything less than greatness is a failure. Which perspective will it be?
I am not unmindful of the wonderful growth in our community and, indeed, in my congregation. Who knows better than me of the inspiring new commitments made by so many, especially over Yom Tov. Hundreds of good resolutions for Mitzvahs – Shul Attendance, Tefillin, Mezuzahs, Shabbos, Kashrut, Torah Study, Tzedakah, Chesed-Kindness and more. In a world gone mad, we are doing fantastic.
But from time to time we need to look from the other perspective as well. How are we doing compared to Abraham? Compared to what we could be?
The philosopher Herman Cohen was once asked why his lectures were so deep and over the heads of most of his audience. He answered, “I aim where their heads should be.” Well, I aim where your hearts should be, where your souls should be. I fully appreciate where my people are at but I refuse to lose sight of where they should be going. That is my purpose, my sacred responsibility and my dream. I dream about the Neshama, the
G-dly soul within each of you.
You say, “Rabbi, we are ordinary guys.” I say no Jew is ordinary. Every Jew is special. I know what you are doing and I am proud of you for it. But I also know what you are capable of, so don’t sell yourself short.
Please, don’t shatter my dream. If we stop dreaming we stop hoping and we stop living. I love you all. You are all wonderful, good Jews. But for me the definition of a good Jew has always been, “One who is trying to be a better Jew.” As good as we may be, let us try to be better still. G-d bless you.
