Dear All,

The weather has at last returned to normal, and I had my first ‘Goef’ of the season this weekend, after months of so called summer….???? BUT….had storms on Tuesday & Wednesday to beat all storms……..

Einaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, been a ‘HUGE’ Rugger season, which came to and end last weekend…….The Bokke had a good season, BUT…..the end of year Northern Hemisphere tour was a disaster, with glaring problems showing in the team…….in bad weather, the Boks have struggled, and that will have to be remedied quickly, as the next World Cup in 2011 in New Zealand, could be played in ‘Kak’ weather, and we could be out, before we start, if we do not work on the weather aspect……The game against the Irish was always going to be tough (and it WAS) , and very few shpielers made an impression…..Steyns failure with the boot meant failure for the Boks, and although we held the scrums …… our lineout was a mess ( no I do not believe ‘Bakkies’ would have made a difference)…….a few of the better Shpielers were injured (Spies, Bakkies, Smith etc) BUT…that is Rugger, you have to have other players that can be slotted in……A disappointing end to a GR888 season…..and a well deserved rest for OUR Bokke….PDV will have to show next year, that he IS a good coach, and come back fighting, or else his HEAD is on the line….will not be easy, as the squad he took over were molded into a unit by Jake (the Fake) White, and he will now have to prove he is worthy of the Bok coaching job……

The Wales / Aussie game showed that the Aussies will become a good ‘Rugger team, and their backs are Flyers…..and they have MANY……the crowds at all the major games were again impressive………

The France / All Blacks game was the pick of the weekend……what a first half…soooo much running from both sides, BUT….as I mentioned last week, I believe that the ‘Schvartzers’ are coming back ( ‘Big Time’) to their best form…..and last year when I mentioned that Conrad Smith reminded me of ‘Onse’ Danie Gerber , I got big ‘Klaps’……and he is going to develop into a VERY good centre…Ma’Nonu , for all his aggression and mean looks, has to go, and they will then have a VERY attacking line……My prediction last week was spot on, not one E-mail acknowledging this, BUT…when a wrong call is made, Oey vey, plenty E-mails…….Looking forward to the 6 Nations in February…..can take a holiday now……

BEER BY SEVEN YEAR OLDS

A handful of 7 year old children were asked 'What they thought of beer'. Some interesting responses, but the last one is especially touching.

‘I think beer must be good. My dad says the more beer he drinks the prettier my mum gets.'

‘Beer makes my dad sleepy and we get to watch what we want on television when he is asleep, so beer is nice. '

‘My Dad gets funny on beer. He is funny. He also wets his pants sometimes, so he shouldn’t have too much.

‘My Dad loves beer. The more he drinks, the better he dances. One time he danced right into the pool.'

'I don't like beer very much. Every time Dad drinks it, he burns the sausages on the barbecue and they taste disgusting.'

The ODI’s against England have been very mixed. With the first one rained out, second one, the ‘Poms’ Moered us, the third one we ‘Moered’ them ‘Stukkend’ and the last one….Well, they pulverized us…bowling us out for 120 ODD…must say, not sure how they are going to pick up the pieces, as the ‘Poms’ are actually a test side, and we are going to battle……need a play maker…..Some of the ‘old’ boys will have to go……the final ODI tomorrow could decide the series…..not holding out much hope, BUT………

End of year function for Consilium Securities Construction Theme in their unfinished renovated offices, was UNDER construction…… Michelle Gordon of Finer Details, conceptualized, coordinated and did the décor. Finer Details had to clean up the area, carpet, bring in everything from power to décor and produce an elegant construction theme. Office workers who saw the indescribable mess in the venue in the morning with piles of rubble and workmen predicted that the function would never materialise. To their astonishment the most beautiful scene was set of elegant tables and delicious food amongst the backdrop of the offices renovations in progress.

An old man and woman were married for many years, even though they hated

Last Sunday, the Helping Hands group (Young Chevra) held a fundraiser at the “Venue” in Melrose Arch, and had an E-mazing turnout of nearly 800 ‘boppers’ and a few ou ‘Toppies’……The entertainment was done by Jesse Clegg, Zunnelle of the ‘White Zulu’ Johnny ……they really do a great job of getting the Younger set involved in ‘Tzedakka’….. With the Financial crisis biting Worldwide, it is time for the Souff Afrikken ‘Yiddisher’ community to start tightening up, and building a ‘solid’ infrastructure, and I believe the time has arrived for some amalgamations of some of the groups, as donations are drying up, and as much as every person wants his own, School, Shul, bakery etc…there are just not enough ‘Yidden’ to keep opening and expanding . Recently, there was a case of a lawyer who got ‘Gupped’ running a Ponzi scheme, and all the ‘Yiddisher’ charities that benefited might have to give back donations, and that is not even bringing ‘Bernie Madoff ‘into the picture….we will have to tighten up, so that an infrastructure can be ‘serviced’ and maintained……..

South Caulfield Shul is right across the road from my house. We had a personal tour of 770 thanks to Rabbi Barber. By the way the NY Marathon was fantastic. Hilton’s family, actually come from the Ottosdal / Sannieshof area, which is near Lichtenburg, where I grew up……and is related to Rabbi Phillip Heilbron of Melbourne, and his Dad Dennis I have known for MANY years…. I read again yesterday (as stated by one of the Congressman who voted for the HC Bill) that one of the ways that they are going to "fund" this new healthcare bill, is to cut Medicare expenses. Call it what you will, but that is RATIONED healthcare.
Let the older people just die and then we won't have the expense to care for them.
A softer, gentler War approach.

If you are not up in arms over this bill and screaming at your Senators and Congressmen, then you will end up with exactly what you deserve.
Here is the solution:
While discussing the upcoming Universal Health Care Program with my sister-in-law the other day, I think we have found the solution. I am sure you have heard the ideas that if you're a senior you need to suck it up and give up the idea that you need any health care. A new hip? Unheard of. We simply can't afford to take care of you anymore. You don't need any medications for your high blood pressure, diabetes, heart problems, etc. Let's take care of the young people. After all, they will be ruling the world very soon.

So here is the solution. When you turn 70, you get a gun and 3 bullets. You are allowed to shoot one senator and 2 representatives. Of course, you will be sent to prison where you will get 3 meals a day, a roof over your head and all the health care you need! New teeth, great! Need glasses, no problem! New hip, knee, kidney, lung, heart? Well, bring it on. And who will be paying for all of this? The same government that just told you that you are too old for health care. And, since you are a prisoner, you don't have to pay any income tax.

The wedding was held at a 5 star resort on the Northwest shoreline of Phuket where all the food was kosher flown in with the chef from Bangkok. Rabbi Mordechai Avtzon from the Chabad of Hong Kong officiated in this truly memorable wedding where everything including Hylton Chilchik’s music was in the most perfect setting on the waters edge. Selwyn was a Dentist in Germiston ‘Amolikke Yoren’ and I did the Barmy’s for them before they went to Aussie….His sister is Hazel Smolowitz whose Zunnelle is married to OUR Rabbi’s daughter (Suchard)…what a small world….Mazeltov to the whole Mishpocha….

His two daughters Serena & Mandy married the Gecelter Broers, Julian & Russell….Serena works at Chabad Savoy, and Julian was in the Army with me in 1971 @ Lenz…Mandy & Russell stay in Melbourne and are part of the Glen Eira Chabad……that is were Little Stan Gordon had his Zunnelle Dijon’s Barmy last year which I went to……Mandy worked at the HOD in the early 80’s when I started Catering there…. ……Michael Levy was a staunch ‘HOD Brother’ for MANY years and was Grand President also……. Flight or Fight?

Of all the things we Jews observe in order to remember events in our historic past, surely one of the strangest must be what we read in this week's parshah. Jacob wrestles with an angel (Esau's spiritual guardian) and in the course of the struggle, his hip is dislocated. Therefore, says the Torah, to this day, the Children of Israel are not to eat the sciatic nerve (of an animal) by the hip joint--because he struck Jacob's hip-socket at the sciatic nerve.

The sciatic nerve (gid hanasheh) and its associated sinews and nerves are located in the animal's hindquarters, and because they are very difficult to properly remove, only cuts from the forequarters are usually available as kosher meat. So if it has always bothered you that you can't get a kosher rump steak, you can blame it on father Jacob and his wrestling match with the angel of Esau.

So, tell me, just because 4,000 years ago one of my ancestors had a hip dislocated I must curb my culinary cravings? Is this fair, is it logical? Why remember that--what's the point?

The 12th century French sage, Rabbi Shmuel ben Meir ("Rashbam"), a grandson of Rashi and a Biblical and Talmudic commentator of note, offers the following insight. The story of Jacob and the angel occurred just prior to Jacob's impending encounter with his estranged twin brother. Esau was coming with four hundred armed men, and Jacob was actually planning to flee from Esau. That was when the angel attacked him. According to Rashbam, the reason for the angel wrestling with Jacob was so that he would be forced to stand his ground and not escape via a back route. Destiny itself was compelling Jacob to confront the enemy and overcome him. Only then would he witness the fulfillment of G-d's promise to protect him from harm.

It seems that Jacob was coming dangerously close to developing a pattern of escapism. He fled Beer-Sheba when Esau threatened to kill him. He fled from Laban in Haran in middle of the night when he worried that Laban wouldn't allow him to return to his homeland. And now he was preparing to flee from Esau. At any moment now there would be yet another nocturnal escape.

Apparently, G-d wanted Jacob to learn that a philosophy of escapism is not the Jewish way. So the angel dislocated his hip, preventing him from running away. Now Jacob had no choice but to fight. In the end, he defeated the angel and was blessed with the name "Israel," signifying a superior stature, victory and nobility. No longer shall it be said that your name is Jacob, but Israel, for you have fought with the divine and with man and you have overcome.

Every son and daughter of Jacob must learn this lesson. Every one of us must become a child of Israel. The quality of fearlessness and courage, of strength and sacrifice, these are the hallmarks of Israel. When we stop running away from our problems and face up to them with guts and fortitude, we enter that higher state of consciousness. We move up from the Jacob Jew, who is still struggling, to Israel mode, where we finally emerge triumphant.

When we are prepared to take up the challenge and go for the fight rather than flight, we move from being wrestlers to becoming winners, from humble Jacob to dominant Israel.

Of course it's never easy. Escape is usually the path of least resistance. Nor am I suggesting that we go looking for a fight. But the fact is that there will be times when we know that we really need to have that confrontation. We need to square up to a particular problem or individual in order to deal with our situation effectively. We shouldn't be confrontational people. But often we know in our heart of hearts that if we don't engage a problem honestly it will continue to plague us.

If we can move from meekness to courage, then the story of Jacob's wrestling match will live on and continue to inspire us to become the stronger personalities we really can be. The dislocated hip joint thus becomes worthy of eternal remembrance because it makes us better people. And the small sacrifices we make in avoiding those unkosher cuts of meat around the animal's hip socket are well worth the effort.
